JD HUFF - Visionary/Creator/Writer/Star
Hi, my name is JD Huff. I had my first job with kids when I was 16 years old at a trampoline house. I remember thinking, "Wow, this is the most fun I've ever had at a job in my life." Granted, the only jobs I'd had before that all included manual labor like mowing lawns or painting cattle fences. After I graduated high school, I got a job at a childcare center because it was something I knew I enjoyed and that I could make money at. I spent two years working there, and that's when I started to realize that working with kids was part of my calling.
I have always said that my favorite thing in the world is making people laugh. My senior year in high school, I was in a musical, and it was then when I realized that maybe I wanted to be an actor or at least do something in the entertainment industry. So when I graduated, I got a job at a childcare center and began taking acting and improv classes. After a few years of training and working, I decided that it was time to make the move out to Los Angeles. That's when I met my mentor Tracy Thomas. I started training with her as well as got a job at a local elementary school to pay the bills.
I started as a yard supervisor, which I loved, because I was able to work with all ages from TK to fifth grade. I then picked up a second job at the after-school program as well. I eventually moved jobs at the school and became a behavioral intervention assistant, which is working with special needs kids. I enjoyed my day job so much that it almost made me want to stop pursuing acting because even though I wanted to book an acting job, I knew that if I did, I would have to leave the school that I worked at. Then one day, after spending 10 years working with kids and 10 years acting, I had an idea. What if I could join the two jobs, working with kids and also acting/entertaining? I loved working with the kids every day at school, solving problems, encouraging the kids, and just being there for them, being someone they could count on, someone they were excited to see and looked up to for advice.
I just felt bad because I could only help so many kids at a time. I can only work at one school. I wish there was a way where I could do more. I know there are kids across the world who need a "goofy big brother" to look up to and encourage them. So when I had the idea for a children's television series, I realized I may be able to make a bigger impact. I immediately started brainstorming with Tracy Thomas to see what the show could be. Everything that we wrote came from my real-life experience working on the job with kids every single day. Everything I wrote was directly inspired by things that I actually saw happen, problems that I saw solved or not solved. After a while of working on the show, I discovered that this show is my true calling. It is what I was meant to do. I knew no matter how long it took, no matter how hard the road was going to be, this is what I was going to do because this is what I was made to do.
